“Before I begin, dear reader, a confession: I am not a speaker of French.” So begins my Mallareméan review of Mallarmé’s A Roll of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance, translated by Robert Bononno & Jeff Clark & published in 2015 by Wave Books. It’s a phenomenal book—brilliant in both translation and design; but rather than write that, this review is an exercise in mimicry & embellishment. I hope what comes through most of all is that the author of the book—much like the author of the review—is very much in love with language as a living object.
